A tow truck is not a suitable way to transport a Porsche or any other premium vehicle. We explain the differences from enclosed transport and the risks of damage.
A Porsche is not an ordinary vehicle. Whether we are talking about a 911 GT3, a Taycan, or an older 964, these are cars with precisely defined values, original paint, and often investment potential. Using a standard tow truck for transport means unnecessary risk. In this guide we explain why the difference between a tow truck and enclosed transport is fundamental, and what that means in practice for the owner.
Tow truck versus enclosed transport: key differences
A common tow truck is a solution for crashed or non-running cars. The vehicle is exposed to the weather, road debris, salt, dust, and often improper securing. On a trip across Europe, this can mean thousands of kilometers during which the paint is literally exposed to everything thrown up from under the wheels of trucks.
An enclosed truck works differently. The vehicle travels inside a body without exposure to outside elements. No stones, no rain, no salt grit. To this is added air-ride suspension that absorbs road impacts, and soft straps instead of classic chains. For a Porsche, which often has lowered ground clearance, original paint, or carbon parts, this is the only sensible way to transport.
Risk of damage to paint and optics
The front grille of a Porsche, the front headlights, splitters, and diffusers are the most exposed parts. With an open tow truck, it is a probability, not a possibility, that the paint suffers micro-scratches, that gravel knocks off a piece of the grille, or that rain marks leave traces on a freshly detailed surface. After a few hundred kilometers, the difference can be visible to the naked eye.
With enclosed transport, the vehicle is protected not only from stones but also from the sun, which on a longer trip can damage leather elements or plastic interior details.
Securing the car: soft straps versus pulling through the wheels
Traditional tow services often secure the vehicle by pulling through the wheels or across the axle. For a Porsche with 20 or 21 inch rims, often forged or carbon, this is not acceptable. A chain or strap across the rim can leave a mark that no one can repair without replacing the entire wheel.
Soft straps are special textile straps fastened exclusively to chassis points, structural body points designed for such loads. The paint, rims, and carbon parts are not in any contact with the securing material. Combined with air-ride suspension, the vehicle has no unnecessary stress on the body throughout the entire route.
Original paint and vehicle value
For collector Porsches, especially models like the 911 Carrera RS, GT2, or limited editions, the value of the vehicle is significantly determined by the condition of the original paint. Any intervention, repainting, significant micro-scratches, or evidence of regular exposure to the elements can reduce the value by tens of percent. Investment in enclosed transport in such a case is insurance for the actual market value of the car.
For newer models the logic is similar. A client who ordered a Porsche with an individual specification in Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur simply does not want the car to cover a thousand kilometers behind a tow truck before its first drive.
What we do differently at TransportCar.eu
At TransportCar.eu we have been transporting premium vehicles since 2013. Over more than 12 years we have built a network of 150+ partners and 200+ corridors covering 28 EU countries plus UK, Switzerland, and Norway. The premium corridor London ↔ Maranello ↔ Monaco ↔ Geneva is the core of our operation.
Every Porsche we load goes through VIN photo documentation before and after transport. The client has access to live GPS tracking throughout the entire route, and 24/7 dispatch handles any situation immediately. CMR insurance is standard; supplementary insurance for higher values is available depending on the type of vehicle.
For standard EU routes we plan 3 to 5 days; for premium vehicles we recommend a 10 day lead time so we can align optimal conditions and drivers experienced with premium machinery. Express transport under 72 hours is possible in specific cases.
Drivers who know what they're doing
Soft straps and chassis points sound trivial in writing. In practice, it is a discipline that requires experience. Our drivers know where the 911 992 generation has its securing point, how a Taycan with deactivated regenerative braking is loaded, and how to approach a 911 GT3 RS with an extended aero kit. This is what makes the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tow truck cheaper than enclosed transport?
In the short term, usually yes. In the long term, the difference disappears quickly once you have to repair paint damage, replace a rim, or address a drop in market value for a collector piece. For a premium vehicle, enclosed transport is the economically logical choice.
Does the Porsche need to be running for you to take it?
Not necessarily. We can also transport non-running vehicles, including project cars or crashed pieces going to restoration. For such cases we use special loading equipment, always within an enclosed truck.
How does pickup from a dealer or seller work?
After the order, we arrange the time directly with the dealer or seller. The driver on site performs an inspection of the vehicle, photo documentation of the VIN and condition, and loads the vehicle using soft straps. The client can monitor the entire transport via live GPS tracking.
What insurance covers the vehicle during transport?
The standard is CMR insurance under international rules. For higher-value vehicles we offer supplementary insurance, which can better cover the real market value of a premium Porsche. We address specific terms individually before the order.
