Classic car transport to a show. Goodwood, Villa d'Este, Schloss Dyck, and how to prepare
How to ship a collector car to an international show. Enclosed truck, air-ride, soft straps at chassis points, and coordination with the organizer.
Goodwood Revival in England, Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on the shore of Lake Como, and Classic Days at Schloss Dyck in Germany are among the most prestigious collector events in Europe. Attending with a rare vehicle requires precise logistics. In this guide we describe how transporting a classic to a show works, from booking to delivery into the paddock.
Why book in advance
The event season is concentrated from spring through fall. Major events mean full enclosed truck capacity across Europe. Dates for specific events need to be agreed several months in advance.
Capacity of enclosed transporters
The number of enclosed trucks in the EU is limited. Every quality transporter has its own schedule. For Goodwood, Villa d'Este, or Mille Miglia, the best slots are reserved roughly half a year before the event.
Corridor and combinations
For a less common destination, like Schloss Dyck from Bratislava or Goodwood from Prague, we plan the corridor so the carrier passes through all points with loaded vehicles. This reduces the price and improves timing. Our network covers 200 and more corridors across twenty-eight EU countries plus UK, CH, and NO.
Enclosed truck and air-ride
For collector vehicles we use enclosed trucks exclusively. The car is protected during transport from rain, dust, sun, birds, and stones from the road. With an open transporter, the risk of damage to paint or chrome on long routes is unacceptable.
Air-ride suspension is pneumatically regulated. The truck adapts to the cargo's weight and absorbs shocks. For vehicles with a stiff chassis or for an original-condition classic, this means significantly less load on the structure during the route.
Soft straps at chassis points
The most important detail in transporting a classic is the method of fixation. We use soft straps exclusively. They are wide textile straps that do not damage the surface of anything they touch.
Where we never fix
- Never across chrome. Safety belts and decorative trim would shift or scratch under pressure.
- Never across fenders. The sheet metal in these places is thin and could buckle under load.
- Never across wheels with original rims. Spokes or original lacquer could suffer.
Where we always fix
Soft straps are fastened at chassis points. These are defined points on the frame or load-bearing parts of the chassis, designed to absorb forces. For classics with a ladder frame, this is directly the frame. For unibody bodies, these are reinforced points at the axle mounts.
Higher insurance for collector vehicles
Standard CMR insurance covers every international transport. For classics, hypercars, or unique collector pieces, the value is incomparably higher than for an ordinary car. For these cases we offer supplementary insurance and higher coverage on request.
For vehicles from auctions like RM Sotheby's, Bonhams, or Gooding & Company, we prepare coverage individually based on the hammer value. For clients with their own insurer, we communicate in parallel with their agent.
Coordination with the show organizer
Goodwood Revival
The organizer in Goodwood, England, requires the exact time of arrival, registration data, and often the scrutineering protocol in advance. Our dispatch can communicate directly with the organizer in English and coordinate the entry window into the paddock.
Villa d'Este Concorso
Concorso d'Eleganza near Cernobbio has a very strict schedule. Vehicles arrive in precise slots, often with an escort to the final spot. Our drivers are accustomed to Italian procedures and communication with the direzione.
Schloss Dyck Classic Days
Classic Days near Düsseldorf are less formal, but space-intensive. A paddock for hundreds of vehicles requires coordination of arrival time so the truck does not sit in a queue.
Delivery to the paddock
We typically offer door to door service. That means pickup from the client's garage and delivery directly to the show. The truck enters the area in agreement with the organizer, and the vehicle is unloaded in the paddock or at a designated spot.
At unloading, we produce photo documentation just as at loading. A photo of the VIN, photos of all sides, details of paint and chrome, the interior. The client receives the set immediately after delivery.
Return transport after the event
After the show, many clients also order return transport. The date is best agreed together with the original order. For Mille Miglia or Tour Auto, we plan the return route from the closing city of the stage, not necessarily from the starting point.
GPS tracking and 24/7 dispatch
During transport, the client tracks the vehicle via live GPS tracking. Our dispatch is available continuously. For shows this is important, because the organizer often changes details in the final hours.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I book transport for Goodwood?
For Goodwood Revival in September, we recommend reserving the date in March or April. Enclosed truck capacity fills up quickly.
Can you pick up the car directly from my garage and deliver to the paddock?
Yes. The standard service is door to door. Pickup from the client's address and delivery directly to the event in agreement with the organizer.
Do you cover higher values of collector vehicles?
For classics and hypercars, we offer higher coverage individually on request. Supplementary insurance is set according to the confirmed value.
How do you fix the car so the chrome is not damaged?
Soft straps are never placed across chrome, fenders, or original wheels. Fixation goes exclusively through chassis points on the frame or reinforced underbody.
Do you also cover British Goodwood after Brexit?
Yes. UK is part of our network. We handle customs formalities and the corridor via the tunnel or ferry.
What's next
Send us the make, model, year, vehicle value, and the event for which transport is planned. We will prepare a quote and reserve an enclosed truck. We have been working with collector cars since 2013, and the combination of an enclosed truck, air-ride, and soft straps is our standard.
